“History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” Attributed to Mark Twain, I find myself thinking of this quite a bit, especially when working on Next Stop, Greenham Common. The game taking place in the late 1970s involves high oil prices, a United States concerned that it is in decline, religious fundamentalism and Russia getting involved in a war that will prove to be seriously unpopular.
One of the items that I am working on at present are the game maps. Below is the Europe map as of this evening – as you can see it’s still fairly early days.

The base map comes from the Central Intelligence Agency, who produced a lot of maps like this during the Cold War and also did a World Factbook that has sadly just been discontinued by the current administration.
I have also just bought four maps from the 1984 game The Third World War that I might be using as an actual physical map for “Central Region” i.e. Denmark down to northern Italy. Fitting the 20 divisions of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany on that map isn’t going to be easy either. They’ll probably have to be stacked.
